We offer affordable recreational gymnastics to the children of Broxburn, Uphall and the surrounding areas and classes are based in the dance studio of Broxburn Academy. We have been running for two years as a successful club supported by volunteer parents and helpers. The club ran previously for 6 years under the local Active School scheme, part of the local council. It was decided to move to an independent club due to an uncertain future due to a potential lack of funding. It was felt it would be a shame to lose such an asset to the community and our parents gladly stepped up to ‘man the helms’.
Within the club the children learn to be confident, take instructions and are encouraged to think about "owning" the club, offering ideas on what equipment they would like to get and suggestions on how to fund raise for this. The Gymnastics Club offers a few hours on a Saturday to teach the children gymnastics as well as skills such as discipline, patience and team work in a non-competitive environment which allows them to aim for individual challenges and not feel pressured into over achieving.
We encourage our older gymnasts to come along and help out in the gym / learn to coach while also working for their Duke of Edinburgh or Saltire awards along the way. Allowing the older gymnasts to help out gives them vital life skills such as communication and team work while also adding experience to their CV's or future careers. Currently we have 4 older gymnasts who come along nearly every week to help out and a further 2 who wish to start in the future.
One of the main achievements of our club is the inclusive atmosphere we maintain. All the children come from different backgrounds and are from a minimum of 5 different primary schools in addition to students from the local senior school. By meeting, working together and befriending children from other primary schools our gymnasts are already making friendships which can make the transition easier for the children and boost their confidence.
All individual successes are celebrated by everyone in the club whether it be someone finally holding a balance which had been troubling them, winners of jumping competitions to achieving more difficult skills like a back walkover. Every one of our gymnasts understands that everyone is different and what they find easy or hard can be different to somebody else and that deserves just as much praise and celebration. We give every child we can a chance to take part in the club and we encourage them to try for individual goals which can help improve health, confidence and self-esteem.
The children work towards the British Gymnastics Badge Scheme and can earn club certificates and medals along the way.All together our club helps improve the children’s fitness, health and well being and we hope to continue to grow and improve in the future.
Come along, Have fun and See what You can Achieve!".
